Description

Original glass plate negative. Self-portrait of Alice Austen sitting in an upholstered chair on the porch of Clear Comfort, the Austen family home, in Rosebank, Staten Island. There is a throw rug under her feet. She leans toward the left side of the image and looks directly at the camera. She is wearing a short-sleeve evening dress with lace trim; she wears elbow-length gloves and holds a partially open fan. On the right is a potted plant on top of an Asian style stand. Directly behind her is a porch column covered with vines; in the background are trees and plants in bloom. There is a bouquet of flowers lying on the rug near her feet. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Seed / 23 / Full length, with fan myself / Fine day, in shade on piazza / P.L. 32 stop / 3.15 P.M / 3 secs / Monday Sept 19th 1892."

Alice Austen (1866-1952), a lifelong resident of Staten Island, was a talented and prolific amateur photographer. Whether photographing friends and family, travel, sporting events, or scenes of urban life, her photographs were carefully composed and captured minute details. In this photo, she poses among the lush greenery surrounding her home.
