Original glass plate negative. View down the length of the porch of the Catskill Mountain House. The porch has tall fluted columns with decorative capitals, a railing on the right, and shuttered windows on the left. At the far end of the porch, the photographer's mother, Alice Cornell Austen, sits in a rocking chair, reading a newspaper; she wears a hat and coat. There is an empty chair next to her.
