Original glass plate negative. View of a naval parade in New York Bay, as seen from the waterfront near the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Groups of people are gathered along the shoreline, some on a bulkhead (sea wall) and others on the sloping lawn. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Sta[nley] / 35 / 436 / Ships in Narrows, naval parade / Fine, hazy day / W.L. Inst / 60 ft 12.45 P.M / Tuesday Oct 11th / 1892." |

The naval parade, part of the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, was reported in great detail in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on October 11, 1892: "... To-day the largest naval parade ever witnessed in the world was the feature of the jubilee...To see 250 vessels of all kinds and descriptions moving along through the water is a sight that cannot be forgotten. Although the parade was announced not to start until 12:30 o'clock this afternoon, the crowd began to assemble early in the morning. Along Staten Island at the Narrows and Long Island, from Fort Hamilton down past Bay Ridge, the inhabitants were out in full force..." |
