Alice Austen's handwritten inscription on the original negative sleeve uses the word "darkies," a derogatory term for black people, to describe the people portrayed in this image: "Stanley / 50 / 771 / Oyster heap & darkies / Fine, sunny day / W.L. / 9.40 A.M / 60 ft / Inst fastest / Tuesday Sept 25th 1894 / Annapolis." |
