Original glass plate negative. Alice Austen (right), Augustine Minshall Hopper (center), and Trude Eccleston (left) stand near a tombstone with the inscription "NO" visible (the rest of the name NOYES is hidden behind Augustine). Trude holds a tissue over her eyes and turns her back to the others. Augustine holds his head in frustration. Alice stands at right, holding a parasol and looking to her left. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Cramer / Crown / No. 387 / Tombstone / Trude Ec. This is one of six photos that Alice Austen staged in front of a tombstone in Watkins, New York. She carefully positioned herself and her friends Trude Eccleston and Augustine M. Hopper to make a play on the name "NOYES," covering part of the name so that it showed as "NO" or "YES." The photos suggest romantic love and spurned affections. |
