Original glass plate negative. Emily (Denning) Van Rensselaer (Mrs. Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer) and her daughter Emily are outdoors in front of their home, Presqu'ile, in Fishkill, New York. Emily sits in a wicker chair and looks down at a small dog that she holds in her lap. Mrs. Van Rensselaer stands next to her, looking off toward the right edge of the image. Behind them is the staircase to the porch of the house; there are numerous potted plants in bloom alongside the house and stairs. |

Ownership and History |
The two women in this photo were distant cousins of Alice Austen's grandmother. They lived in Presqu'ile, a home owned by the Denning family in Dutchess County, New York. The book The History of Dutchess County, published in 1909, says that the land where the house was built had originally been an island, but it was probable that the Dennings built a causeway and converted the island into a peninsula which they named Presqu'ile ("almost an island"). The land today is Dennings Point State Park. |
