Original glass plate negative. Interior view with a posed group of four women and five men; some are seated and some are standing. Several people hold teacups; the man at left holds out a serving plate to the woman seated next to him. In the foreground on the right a man lays face down on the floor. Alice Austen is seated on the right; Julia Bredt stands in the back center. The photographer's initials are inscribed in the lower left corner: "E.A.A." The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "No. 262 / Mrs Meyers, Nan Webb Julia B. & self / Messrs Booth, Rawl, Lebrod, Micklesly & Shumann / No gas light, flash / 10 P.M / W.L. / 12 ft / Monday Feb. 22nd / 1892 / Bethlehem." Alice Austen took this carefully posed group photo while visiting her friend Julia Bredt in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Bredt family had previously lived near Alice Austen on Staten Island, but moved to Bethlehem in the 1880s. |
