Original glass plate negative. Trude Eccleston is seated in a chair on the lawn of Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. A man identified as Mr. Gregg is seated on the arm of the chair, holding a drinking glass. Trude is seen in profile, and she looks toward the left edge of the image; she holds a handkerchief in her left hand and a fan in her right hand. A small section of the Clear Comfort porch is visible at right; on the porch is a chair with a hat on the seat and an umbrella leaning against the seat. The photographer's initials are inscribed in the lower left corner of the negative: "A.A." (Keywords: New York) |

"Mr. Gregg" is Lieutenant John C. Gregg, who served with the Sixteenth Infantry of the U.S. Army and was stationed for many years at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He and Trude Eccleston met when Trude visited Utah in 1890, and their engagement was announced in October 1891, although they did not marry. He is seen here on a visit to New York in the summer of 1891. |
