Description Folding fan. Cream silk leaf with hand-painted purple and white flowers with green leaves, and a brown leaf border. Reverse is decorated with a smaller hand-painted sprig of pink roses. Drilled and incised mother-of-pearl sticks with applied metallic foil. Mother-of-pearl washer at rivet. Metal loop with silk and metallic wire tassel. Probably made in France.

Ownership and History The opulence of this fan comes from the richness of the materials. It features an abundance of hand-painted violets on a silk leaf, luminous mother-of-pearl sticks, and an ornate tassel of silk with gold metallic wire. It is one of several fans in the collection from the wealthy Louis H. Meyer family of Fingerboard Road, Staten Island.
