Object Name Card, Trade
Date ca. 1885
Description Trade card. Chromolithograph on paper. Illustration of a woman in a house interior with a carpeted floor and a fireplace in the background. She stands in profile, and she is using a rag to clean a door. A chair is next to the door, and a pail is on the seat. Inscription is printed vertically: "SCOURENE". In tiny print at bottom edge: "Donaldson Brothers, N.Y." Printed on reverse: "There is no Cleaning and Scouring Soap, AT / ANY PRICE, that will do MORE or / BETTER Work than / SCOURENE. / (Wrapped in BLUE Paper with RED Band, printed in Black.) / It will Clean everything in and about the house; / Paints, Oil Cloths, Marble, Hard Walls, Bath Tubs, / Kitchen Wares, etc., and will Polish Brass, / Copper, Tin and Steel Wares of all kinds. Try / it and save Time, Labor and Money. / Price, 5 cents for large Cake. / MANUFACTURED ONLY BY / The Simonds Soap Co., / 12 MURRAY STREET, / NEW YORK."

Ownership and History Scourene was manufactured by The Simonds Soap Company, which was in operation from 1884 to 1892.

Donaldson Brothers printing firm was located in the Five Points neighborhood of lower Manhattan, New York City. It was established in 1872 and merged with the American Lithographic Company in 1892.
