|Ownership and History||
John Cole (1806-1883) and his wife Catharine Rachel (Winant) Cole (1813-1871) were married in December 1831 in the Woodrow Methodist Church, Staten Island, at which time Cole was described as a waterman of Westfield. Bradley painted the young couple in the spring of 1833, and the portraits presumably remained in the Cole House at the foot of St. Luke's Avenue, Rossville, until they were donated to the Staten Island Historical Society by Cole family descendants in 1949.
Portrait painter John Bradley was born in Great Britain and immigrated to United States. He was active in the New York City area from 1832 to 1847.
