Description Man's top hat. Made of black silk plush. Tall cylindrical crown flares slightly at flat top. Flat brim. Hatband is tan fabric ribbon with black stripes. Crown and brim have a cardboard foundation.

Acquisition Museum Purchase
Ownership and History This hat probably belonged to Patrick Seaver (1813-1877) of Southfield, Staten Island. Mr. Seaver came to the U.S. from Ireland in the 1840s, settling first in Manhattan, and then moving to Staten Island. He and his brother Lawrence operated the Richmond Mill from approximately 1851-1883. In his later years he farmed a large tract of land in the area of Dongan Hills, Staten Island. He and his wife Maria had 9 children.
