Object Name Fan

Description Folding fan. White paper leaf has a hand-painted bird, tree, and flowers in black, gray, white, and pink, with faint white Japanese characters near the right edge. Reverse is black glazed paper with a hand-painted silver landscape and Japanese characters. Black lacquered bamboo sticks. Riveted at bottom, with a metal loop. Made in Japan.

Ownership and History The delicate cherry blossoms on this fan are a national symbol of Japan. Thousands of cherry trees, presented to the United States in 1912 by the people of Japan, still blossom each spring in Washington, D.C.
