Marriage certificate. Printed and handwritten inscription: "MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. / THIS IS TO CERTIFY / THAT / Willett Leslie Conner / of Tottenville, Staten Island / AND / Bertha Manee / of Richmond Valley, S.I. / were joined together in / HOLY MATRIMONY / by me at Tottenville, Staten Island according to / the ordinance of God and the Laws of the State of / New York on the 20th day of October 1896 / Winfield S. McCowan / Pastor St Pauls M.E. Ch." Printed at bottom: "A.H. Eilers Publishing Co. St. Louis, Mo. Series No 29." Certificate has engraved oval image of a wedding ceremony at top, and a border of gothic design and flowers. Handwritten label glued on reverse, probably from donor: "Mrs WL Conner".

This is the 1896 marriage certificate of Bertha Manee and Willett Leslie Conner. Willett Conner worked for some years as a telegrapher, and later had a real estate business. He also served as postmaster of Richmond, Staten Island, a job taken over by Bertha following Willett's death in 1932. The Conners were the parents of 16 children.
Mrs. Conner donated this item to the Staten Island Historical Society in 1946.
