Description Verse sampler. Embroidered with silk thread on linen ground. Elaborate border of leaves and flowers. Landscape in center with people fishing and a church in the distance. Inscription next to verse: "Rachel Ann / Egbert Tompkins / ville Aged 8 / Years and 6 / months in the Year 1833". Verse: "A Competence / is all we can / enjoy O be / content where / heavn can / give no more". Overall dimensions are 16.625" H x 18.250" W.

Ownership and History Rachel Ann Egbert's sampler features a pastoral scene with two people fishing and a church in the distance. Scenes of this type were often drawn from contemporary prints.

Rachel Ann Egbert was born in Tompkinsville, Staten Island, on December 5, 1824. She was the second of six children of Lydia Seguine and John Egbert, and there are no records of her having married. She died at age 32, and was buried on December 11, 1856.
