Object Name Lounge
Date 1885
Description Eastlake style asymmetrical lounge. Made of walnut and walnut veneer with marquetry inlay, and upholstered in orange damask with a circle design (upholstery is not original). Lounge has an angled klismos back, and a stepped upholstered panel above the rear seat rail topped with pediment and balustrade. The same decoration is on the straight skirt and the short end. The turned legs are on casters. Made in the eastern United States, and possibly upstate New York. Measures 43.750 inches high x 82 inches wide x 28 inches deep.
Ownership and History This is a fine example of an asymmetrical lounge. Lounges (couches) were produced throughout the nineteenth century, but enjoyed a period of great popularity in the decade of the 1880s.
