Object Name Purse
Date 1850-1915
Description Purse. Green wool with flap closure. Overall design in couched metal-wrapped thread in looped and interlaced pattern. Front has a circular crochet design of metal-wrapped thread over a bluish-gray fabric underlay, surrounded by beads, sequins, metal purl (coiled wire) and metallic cord, with embroidery and a beaded tassel in the center. Design on reverse has similar elements, but the crochet circle is smaller. Edged with metallic braid; flap has edging of crochet lace in scallop pattern stitched to braid edging. Beaded fringe on bottom edge. Handle is cord made of braided metal-wrapped thread over a yellow core, with a tassel on each end; cord is knotted to two loops of a finer, twisted metallic cord that is applied to top edge of bag. Pink cotton lining with snap closure (possibly a later addition). Measures 10.5 inches high (not including handle) x 7.750 inches wide.
