Description Porcelain occupational shaving mug. Name inscribed in gold at top: "Frank S. Norton". Mug has gold trim and is decorated with a painted illustration of the cartoon character "The Yellow Kid" wearing a long yellow shirt with an inscription: "SAY / GIT ON TO ME / MUG / I GITS IT FIXED UP IN / FERGUSON'S / HE SMOKES CLARKS / & / MORTONS SEGARS / ALL OF THE SQUARE / SEE!" Mug is cylindrical with a shaped base, rolled rim, and loop handle. Mark on the underside: "LIMOGES / PHL / FRANCE". Height is 4 inches; diameter is 3.750 inches.

Acquisition Gift of the estate of Frank S. Norton
Ownership and History This shaving mug belonged to Francis Sherman Norton (born 1874) of West New Brighton, Staten Island. In the 1900 census, his occupation was listed as "cigar agent." He later worked for many years as a carpenter in building construction.

"The Yellow Kid," also known as Mickey Dugan, was a cartoon character in the newspaper comic strip "Hogan's Alley." The cartoon first appeared in the New York World in 1895, and later ran in other newspapers.
