Object Name Chair, Hall

Description Hall chair with elaborate carving. The back has a one-piece pierced and shaped panel with quatrefoil motifs above arched seat back. The front legs are elaborately vase-and-ring turned, and the rear legs are plain and square. The front seat rail has a series of small arches along the lower edge; the straight-sided seat widens in front. Marked underneath the seat: "Henderson 1008 Walnut Street." Made in New York City or New York State. This chair is a pair with X85.0194. Measures 42.5 inches high x 18.5 inches wide x 17.5 inches deep.
Ownership and History The name "Henderson" in the inscription may connect this chair with the prominent Henderson family of Staten Island. John C. Henderson (1809-1884), an importer and manufacturer of dry goods, lived in New Brighton, Staten Island, with his wife and their fifteen children.
