Object Name Fan
Date ca. 1880-1920
Description Folding fan. Off-white paper leaf has an ink and wash landscape with mountain, river, trees, and boats. The reverse side has a hand-painted floral and leaf design in red, purple, yellow, and green. Two butterflies and two birds fly above the flowers. The bamboo sticks have serrated edges. Dark brown lacquered bamboo guardsticks. Probably made in China or Japan.

Acquisition Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Leonard in memory of Mrs. Cornelius Leonard
Ownership and History Mary (Wood) and Cornelius Leonard Jr. resided in Travis, Staten Island. Cornelius was listed as an oysterman in the 1880 census.

This fan was part of a collection of items donated to the Staten Island Historical Society by Mary (Wood) Leonard's estate following her death in 1947.
