Object Name Medal, Commemorative
Date 1865-1874
Description Large bronze medal, circular, with bust profile at center, facing right. Raised inscription around edge of obverse: "A GRATEFUL COUNTRY TO HER GENEROUS SON / CORNELIUS VANDERBILT;" reverse has raised image of 2 allegorical figures in front of a steamship with an eagle at right, and the inscription: "ELLIS SC. LEUTZE DEL. / BIS DAT QUI TEMPORI DAT. / 1865". Medal is 3 inches in diameter.
Ownership and History This is a copy of the gold Congressional Medal presented to Cornelius Vanderbilt in gratitude for his gift of the Steamship "Vanderbilt" for the service of the Union during the Civil War. The original medal was sent to Vanderbilt by William Seward in 1866. This is believed to be one of a small number of copies made in 1874.
