Morgan / was elected a member of Oceanic Hook and Ladder Company / No. 1 / IN THE North Shore Fire Department OF / STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. / June 1st 1895 / this certificate was issued by the Board of Representatives N.S.F.D. / OFFICERS OF REPRESENTATIVES / John L. Dobson Pres / Wm. Snedeker Sec'y. / Nov. 11th 1895 / OFFICERS OF COMPANY / Almer Sofield Foreman / Isaac Haughwout Treasurer / [Oscar?] Winant Secretary / BARGET & BIRGEL LITHOGRAPHERS, 2 LIBERTY ST. N.Y." Certificate has a gold paper seal affixed, inscribed "BOARD OF REPRESENTATIVES / N.S.F.D." Certificate measures 19 inches high x 24 inches wide.

Acquisition Gift of William Morgan
Ownership and History William A. Morgan (1872-1952), a carpenter and maritime worker, made models of buildings and ships as a hobby as well as being a volunteer firefighter. He lived at 1029 Rockland Avenue in New Springville, Staten Island. Mr. Morgan gave this certificate to the Staten Island Historical Society in 1943.

Oceanic Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 of Travis, Staten Island was established in 1881. (At that time, the town was known as Linoleumville, home of the first linoleum factory in America.) Oceanic Hook & Ladder still occupies its historic fire station at 4010 Victory Boulevard. It is one of two remaining volunteer fire companies on Staten Island as of 2016.
