Trade card. Chromolithograph on paper. Illustration of the Statue of Liberty. Her pedestal and her torch are spools of thread. Manhattan is visible in the background, with the Brooklyn Bridge at far right. Inscription on top spool: "BEST / IN THE / WORLD". Inscription on spool that serves as her base: "A / SUPERIOR SILK / IS MANUF. BY / THE / BRAINERD and / ARMSTRONG / CO." Inscription on either side of the statue: "The Bartholdi Statue of Liberty / The Largest in the World / The Brainerd & Armstrong Co's Spool Silk / The best in the World". Printed at bottom edge: "MAYER, MERKEL & OTTMANN. LITH. 21-25 WARREN ST. N.Y." Printed on reverse: "The Bartholdi Statue / OF / Liberty Enlightening the World / To be erected at the entrance of New York Harbor, on Bedloe's / Island. It will require a pedestal of solid masonry..." The text goes on to describe the statue, and compares its height to a list of other famous monuments including the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the bottom is an advertisement for the silk and addresses of the company's offices and salesrooms.
