|Acquisition||Gift of Thomas T. Winant|
|Ownership and History||
The sword was given to donor Thomas T. Winant's grandfather, Thomas P. Connell (a Staten Island undertaker), as payment for burial by someone who couldn't afford to pay. The donor said it was common practice to pay for funerals with objects rather than money.
The initials "AHC" are for Archibald H. Ceiley, U.S. Ordnance Department Inspector active in 1862 and 1863.
