Artist Kost, Frederick W.
Date July 5, 1881
Title At Richmond Valley, S.I.
Description Pencil drawing on light greenish-brown paper, with highlights colored white. The scene is identified at center left in ink: "at Richmond Valley / S.I. July 5th 81" and is signed center right in pencil: "F.W. Kost". The scene which fills the upper portion of the paper is a cluster of farm buildings including a hayrick at left. A sagging roof and lost or missing boards give the buildings an aged appearance, and leafy trees grow behind them. A fallen tree trunk is depicted on the lower portion of the paper. A second drawing (catalog number 42.007.0001.B) appears on the other side of the paper. The paper measures 8.625 inches high x 12 inches wide.

Ownership and History Richmond Valley, a community centered on Amboy Road just east of Tottenville, Staten Island, remained a farming community into the 20th century. In 1881, when this drawing was made, artist Frederick W. Kost was about 20 years old. A Staten Island resident, he had already studied art in New York and was soon to embark upon studies at major academies in Europe. His first exhibition was a submission to the National Academy of Design in 1882. See the book "Staten Island Scenery: Paintings, Prints, Drawings and Photographs, 1679-1900” by Barnett Shepherd (page 170) for more information.
