Exhibit Label Text Known on Staten Island for more than 50 years, the Garber Brothers clothing stores grew out of a door-to-door clothing dealership. Brothers Paul, David and Louis Garber opened their first store in Port Richmond in approximately 1920, later adding locations in Stapleton and New Dorp. The brothers sold the business to a nationwide apparel chain in about 1964.
Exhibit Label Text A native of Staten Island, Herbert A. Flamm was an active community leader as well as a prolific commercial photographer. Clients such as the Board of Transportation, the Richmond Poster Company, and owners of family businesses hired Mr. Flamm to document local stores and street scenes. The Staten Island Historical Society owns more than 7,000 of Mr. Flamm's original film negatives.
