Description B&W print made from original negative. View of a beach and boardwalk, taken from an elevated vantage point. At left is a large two-story building with a cupola and a sign "[S]CENIC RAILWAY." An American flag flies alongside the building. In front of the building is a sidewalk and a wide boardwalk, with numerous men, women, and children walking. To the right is the beach, which is crowded with people. A number of men and women are seated in benches along the edge of the boardwalk, looking out over the beach. The ocean is at right. Printed inscription in lower left: "PUBL. BY / W.J. GRIMSHAW".

Acquisition Collection of the Staten Island Historical Society
Ownership and History Like nearby Coney Island, the popular resort areas at Staten Island's Midland Beach and South Beach drew crowds of middle-class vacationers. Many of the amusement halls and hotels of these resorts were destroyed by fires in the early 20th century.
