Description Original glass plate negative. Self portrait of Alice Austen dressed in a Spanish costume; she holds castanets in each hand. She is seen through a doorway with wooden shutters. Identified in the photographer's inscription as "Myself in Spanish costume. Cap off and on. Sat., May 29, 1886, 10:30 a.m."

Ownership and History In the book "Alice's World," Ann Novotny says that Alice was dressed for a dance recital, and her costume was a skirt of yellow satin with a jacket of sequined black velvet. She wrote that Alice recalled many years later that the clothing was "run up" by a dressmaker who came to her house.
