Description Original glass plate negative. Two crews of rowers are prepared to begin a race on a river. In the foreground is the river bank, and in the background is a small steam powered boat. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Stanley / No. 349 / Yale vs Harvard race / Judges boat / start / Cloudy, rainy day / W.L. / 5.12 PM / 60 ft / Inst. medium / Friday July 1st / 1892 / New London."

Ownership and History This photo shows the Yale-Harvard Boat Race (also called the Yale-Harvard Regatta), an annual rowing contest between the two universities. The first race was held in 1852.
