Description Original glass plate negative. John Haggerty Austen sits in a rocking chair on the porch of Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. He wears a three-piece suit and a straw hat, and he holds a folded newspaper in his lap. To the left and right are porch trellises covered with vines. The door to the house is open, and framed prints are visible on the walls of the entry hall. A corresponding original print has the photographer's inscription "Grandfather / July 1885".

Acquisition Museum Purchase
Ownership and History John Haggerty Austen (1811-1894), the grandfather of photographer Alice Austen, worked in Manhattan as an auctioneer in the business founded by his father. The Austen firm specialized in "dry goods" (textiles and carpets). Mr. Austen and his wife and children moved from Manhattan to Staten Island in the early 1850s.
