Description Original glass plate negative. Alice Austen (center), Violet Ward (right), and Caroline Ward (left) stand on the lawn of the Austen house, Clear Comfort, in Rosebank, Staten Island. All three women are wearing bathing suits and bathing caps. The porch of the house is partially visible at right. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "A.R / 40 / No. 29 / V. & C. Ward & self in bathing suits / Fine day, in shade / 3.30 P.M / Friday 11th July 1890 / D".

Ownership and History Alice Austen posed this photograph of herself with her friends, sisters Violet and Caroline Ward of Grymes Hill, Staten Island. The three were active sportswomen, enjoying swimming, tennis, and other athletic pursuits.
