Ownership and History Agricultural activity is shown continuing on the 65-acre Elmer Butler estate in Tottenville, Staten Island, two weeks before it was sold at auction. A newspaper account of the auction noted that the estate included beach frontage, two farm houses, three barns, a 16-room steel and concrete residence built in 1900, an eight-room guest cottage, a gate cottage with five rooms, a combination boat house and bath house, and a windmill built by Mr. Butler in the 1890s for pumping water.

The newspaper account gave a brief synopsis of Mr. Butler's life: "The late Elmer Butler, who died at the age of 92, created and maintained a colonial air about the vast property. Born in the vicinity of the present estate on Hylan Boulevard, Tottenville, he made silver mining his life's work and spent more than 20 years in the west."
