Description Original glass plate negative. View of the deck of a Staten Island Ferry boat, with men and women seated on chairs and benches; a boy and a girl stand in the center. On the right a man looks out over the railing with a pair of binoculars. New York Harbor is visible on the right. Inscription in the lower left corner: "E.A.A." The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Stanley / 35 / No 671 / 3rd race Mrs. Van [Vechten?] & [more?] / Our party Mrs. Emmons & family / The [Franks?], Trude & [rest of line is cut off] / Fine day windy / W.L. / 2.40 P.M / 25 ft about / Inst / Monday Oct. 9th 1893".

Ownership and History The "third race" in the photographer's title for this photo is the 1893 America's Cup race between the American yacht Vigilant and the British challenger Valkyrie. The Vigilant won the race, and days later went on to win the America's Cup.
