Original B&W print on cream cardboard mount. Group portrait of 5 men and 2 women gathered around a table with open books; a spinning wheel, painted portrait, and other artifacts are in the background, and a fire burns in a fireplace at left. Signature on mount below photo: "Russart. / S.I." Two handwritten inscriptions (in different handwritings) on reverse, one in pen and one in pencil. In pen: "Taken in the Perine House, 1476 Richmond Road / April, 1940 / Presented to the Staten I'd / Historical Society by / Wm. T. Davis / Aug, 1940". In pencil: "Early members of the Staten Island Historical Society / From left to right: Harry Kuhn, Mrs. T.L. Kennedy, / Wm. T. Davis, Charles W. Leng and Carl F. Grieshaber. / Standing Mrs. Katharine Seaman & Cornelius G. Kolff."
A similar photo that was apparently taken on the same day, also now in the collection of the Staten Island Historical Society, is identified in an inscription as 7 of the 8 original charter members of the Staten Island Antiquarian Society.

The Staten Island Antiquarian Society merged with the Staten Island Historical Society in 1922. This image shows members gathered inside the historic Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House on Richmond Road in Dongan Hills, Staten Island. The landmarked building, built ca. 1662, is owned by the Staten Island Historical Society.
Russ-Art Studio studio was founded by photographer Joseph Berman (1894-1977). Berman came to New York from Minsk, Russia in 1912. He established Russ-Art in 1923, and photographed prominent Staten Islanders for half a century before retiring in 1974.
