Description Original glass plate negative. Dr. John Clarkson Eccleston and his wife Mary Louise Eccleston stand on the porch steps of the rectory of St. John's Church in Rosebank, Staten Island. Dr. Eccleston looks directly at the camera; he holds a hat in his right hand and a rolled up piece of paper in his left hand; a pair of pince-nez glasses hangs from a chain at his neck. Mrs. Eccleston stands in profile, looking toward the right side of the image; she holds a fan in her right hand. A chair is partially visible on the porch. Inscription "E.A.A" in lower left corner.

Acquisition Museum Purchase
Ownership and History Dr. John Clarkson Eccleston (1828-1912) became the rector of St. John's Church in February 1856, and served for seven years. In 1863 he became rector of Trinity Church in Newark, New Jersey. In 1866 he returned to St. John's Church on Staten Island, and served for more than 40 years.

Dr. and Mrs. Eccleston were the parents of Trude Eccleston, a close friend of photographer Alice Austen.
