Description Original glass plate negative. Julia Martin (wearing a striped dress) stands alongside a two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage. Her father, I. Kingsley Martin, and her stepmother, Sarah (Schuyler) Martin, are seated in the carriage. The young boy seated in the carriage with them is most likely their son, Schuyler Martin, who was born in 1884. They are on an unpaved road with fields in the background and mountains in the distance. One house is visible in the center distance. Inscription "E.A.A" in the lower left corner. The inscription on the envelope identifies the group as "Horses, Mr. & Mrs. M. / Miss Walsh / Saturday / Aug. 9, 1890 / Bennington Vt." (Keyword: Vermont)

Ownership and History Alice Austen's friend Julia Martin grew up on Staten Island. In the early 1890s she moved to Bennington, Vermont, where she was a caregiver for an elderly woman.
