Description Original glass plate negative. A view across the lawn at Harvard Yard toward a large crowd of people, mostly facing away from the camera. Large trees in bloom have thick trunks which appear to be encircled by ribbons. There are paths leading to buildings in the background. Numerous men are walking on the lawn and the paths, and at least one appears to be wearing a cap and gown. Near the center of the image there are two men seated on the lawn, one sitting on the grass and the other in an upholstered armchair.

Ownership and History With this photograph, Alice Austen captured the scene at Harvard Yard on commencement day, June 29, 1892. On that day, Harvard University awarded more than 500 degrees, all to men. Female students at that time had the option to receive instruction at the nearby Harvard Annex.
