Description Original glass plate negative. View of a yard behind two small buildings, one brick and one wooden. There is debris scattered on the ground. Bessie Strong stands behind a large wooden barrel that is laying on its side; she holds a small dog that is standing on the barrel. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "A&R / 40 / 12 / The Strong's barn Bessie / & dog / cloudy day. / About 50 ft. 8.15 am / D. / Monday June 23d / 1890".

Ownership and History Alice Austen's friend Bessie Strong lived with her parents in their family home, known as "Stronghold," in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This photo shows Bessie and her dog by the family's barn.
