Object Name Print, Photographic
Photographer Steinrock, Charles M.
Date ca. 1888
Collection Staten Island Geographic Collection
Description Original B&W print on tan cardboard mount. Front view of three adjacent buildings as seen from across an unpaved street. At left is a three-story wood frame building with a storefront on the first floor (possibly a barber shop; there are two poles with spiral stripes on either side of the door). In the center is a two-story brick building with large windows on the first floor; there are two doors, with signs above: "193" and " POST OFFICE;" a window on the second floor displays a sign: "LONG / DISTANCE / TELEPHONE" inside the shape of a bell. The two-story wood frame building at right is partially visible, with a storefront that appears to have a display of ceramic items. A utility pole is in the center of the image; to the left of the pole are several people looking toward the camera, including a man, a young man or teenager, and a boy. Handwritten inscriptions in pen on reverse (two different handwritings): "CENTER BUILDING / 1ST Telephone Building on S.I. / on Richmond Terrace (still standing 1972) / OVER POST OFFICE / c. 1888" and "Barber Shop. Post Office & Telephone Office / opposite Pine Residence / W.N. Brighton / S.I. N.Y." Stamped inscription on reverse: "C.M. STEINROCK / BIRDSBORO, / BERKS CO., PA."
