Description Original glass plate negative. View of several people near a small wooden building on a rocky shoreline. An older man with a long beard stands in the foreground, facing the camera; he holds a hat in his right hand and a fish in his left hand. Two men sit on the steps of the building; one is reading, and the other holds fishing net. A man and a boy stand at left; the man holds a fish in one hand and fishing net in the other. Four oars lean up against the building. Long poles with fishing net are on the ground next to the building.

Ownership and History This photo shows John Silva's shad-fishing station, which was located on the Clifton, Staten Island, waterfront just north of photographer Alice Austen's home. John Silva is listed as "fisherman" in the 1890 Staten Island directory.
