Lysbet holds a doll in both arms; Peter Austen carries a book under his left arm. They stand together in front of a gate; in the background is an unpaved road and a house. The photographer's initials "E.A.A." are inscribed in the lower left corner.

Ownership and History Alice Austen's uncle Peter T. Austen lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with his wife Nellie and their children William Munroe, Elizabeth Patty, and Oswald. Peter Austen was a professor of chemistry at Rutgers College.
