Description Original glass plate negative. Portrait of a young Alice Austen standing on a lawn with a backdrop of plants in bloom. She stands in profile, turning her head to face the camera. She wears a striped dress with a bustle; gloves; and a hat decorated with lilacs; she holds a closed umbrella in her left hand and a round object that appears to be a compact in her right hand. The photo was taken by Alice's uncle Oswald Muller.

Acquisition Museum Purchase
Ownership and History According to the book "Alice's World" by Ann Novotny, this photograph was taken by Alice Austen's uncle Oswald Muller, a ship captain from Copenhagen. Oswald married Alice's aunt Minn in 1871, and she often accompanied him on his journeys. When not at sea, they lived at the Austen home, Clear Comfort, in Rosebank, Staten Island.
