Description Original B&W print on off-white cardboard mount. Full-length portrait of a young boy with shoulder-length hair. He is wearing an outfit with a long belted top over knickers. He holds a toy rifle; he is standing on a draped surface with a blank background (likely in the photographer's studio). Printed inscription on the mount below the photo: "I. Almstaedt TOMPKINSVILLE, S.I." Handwritten inscription in pencil on the reverse of the mount: "Edward Allen Low Shortt / Dec. 25th 1899." The inscription is in Alice Austen's handwriting.

Ownership and History Edward Allen Low Shortt (1896-1916) of Staten Island was three years old when this photo was taken. He was the son of William Allaire Shortt, an attorney and New York State Assemblyman. The Shortt family was related to photographer Alice Austen.
