Ownership and History Although the date inscribed on the photograph is September 18, 1900, it seems likely that this photo actually shows an event that took place the following day. The Staten island Driving Club's parade was discussed in an article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on September 10, 1900: "The Staten Island Driving Club, to fittingly celebrate the opening of its new speedway, on the South Shore boulevard, at Grant City, has arranged an elaborate programme for Wednesday afternoon, September 19, the day selected for the opening. A parade composed of carriages from all the driving clubs in the greater city and in Hudson County, N.J., will be held. There will be trotting events on the speedway, and a banquet will follow in the evening. The parade will be formed at the Port Richmond Park, at 1:30 P.M., and the line of march will be along the shore road to the Fingerboard road to the South Shore boulevard, and thence to the speedway, where the trotting will begin."
