Ownership and History This photo shows the new Richmond County Jail, which was constructed in 1904-1905 to replace an earlier structure. The design of the new jail reflected a growing national concern for the health and welfare of prisoners. The smaller building to the right was the jailer's house. The jail was closed in 1953 and demolished by the City of New York in 1959.
