Description Original film negative. A group of four women, three men, and one boy sit on folding chairs on the deck of a ship. Alice Austen stands in the center, and Gertrude Tate is seated at right; they appear to be wearing matching sweaters and hats. Gertrude has a camera in her lap. The woman seated next to Gertrude holds a book in her hand, and the boy has his arm around the woman's shoulder. Other people are visible on the deck, including two men in uniform.

Ownership and History Alice Austen took this photo on board the ocean liner Graf Waldersee, a part of the Hamburg America line. The ship was launched on December 10, 1898, and in April 1899 it made its maiden voyage from Hamburg to Boulougne to New York.
