Description Original glass plate negative. Interior view of a bedroom at Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Furnishings include two beds with metal headboards, a Windsor rocking chair, and an etagere. The walls are decorated with a variety of plates and other ceramic items. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription (the inscription refers to this negative and also to negative 50.015.5255): "1276 & 1277 / Seed / 27 / Our room towards window / 1 m 45 secs 20 ft 3.10 PM / Medium light, flashed / with looking glass / No 1277 Our room / beds 1 m 50 secs 20 ft 3.30 P.M / Monday Nov 28 1898 / W.L."

Acquisition Museum Purchase
Ownership and History The framed motto hanging on the wall over the bed at right is now in the Staten Island Historical Society collection (catalog number 49.010.0003). The motto, "Example is better than precept," was reportedly painted by Alice Cornell Austen, mother of photographer Alice Austen. The motto was donated to the Historical Society by Alice Austen in 1949.
