Description Original B&W print on beige cardboard mount. Posed group photograph of Max Schmidt and members of the Band White and Gold; all are wearing band uniforms. Max Schmidt is seated in a chair; a young boy, seen in profile, is seated next to him in a child-size chair. Four band members stand behind them, each holding a brass horn raised with one hand. A banner is draped from each horn; the banners at right and left have inscription "BAND / WHITE / & / GOLD." The caps of the men with the horns all have inscription "SCHMIDT" above an eagle with spread wings. The group is posed in front of a painted backdrop with a landscape and a balcony. Embossed inscription in lower right corner of the mount: "Underwood / LONG BRANCH, / N.J."

Biography and History Max Schmidt and his "Band White and Gold" were popular entertainers for many years at Midland Beach, Staten Island. Newspapers in the early 1900s also reported on their concerts at various locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and at New Jersey shore resorts.
