Biography and History Gustav A. Mayer was born in Ulm, Germany in 1845, and later emigrated to New York City after traveling in Germany and Switzerland. In New York he established a confectionery business, a trade which he learned while living in Europe. It was in 1870 that Mayer moved to Stapleton on Staten Island, where his business began to flourish. He designed and patented specialized molds and equipment from which sweet biscuits and wafers were produced, and was said by some to have been the originator of the mass-produced sugar wafer in America. In the late 1890s, the Mayer family moved to New Dorp, where Gustav began to produce other goods, such as paper decorations and a patented room humidifier. Gustav A. Mayer died in 1918.
