Collection Name Ethel Fowler Papers
Title Series 1: Personal Papers, 14 folders, 1936--1971
Date 1936-1971
Description Personal papers are contained in 14 folders and include clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, ephemera, notes, and business records. Three general groups of papers can be distinguished: real estate and apartment living, American Red Cross activities, and Society for Seamen's Children activities. The real estate material, from 1936 to 1939, is scant, but may reflect Fowler's involvement in real estate that she or her organizations owned at the time. The American Red Cross material, from 1942 to 1949, primarily documents the role of its Staten Island volunteers in meeting the needs of World War II servicemen, such as blood drives. Fowler continued with the Red Cross after the war, participating as a delegate to the 1946 and 1947 national conventions, among other things. The focus of the papers shifts by 1949, documenting Fowler's work in the Society for Seamen's Children and in other child welfare agencies. The major portion of the papers from about 1949 to 1961 are organizational records of the Society, and include financial records, board minutes, constitutions and by-laws. Content of materials in the Personal Papers series may overlap with the Scrapbooks series. Some loose items found with scrapbooks were integrated into Personal Papers.
